About this app

This Android application is an explanation of Convenience Store Woman, Minimarket Girl by Sayaka Murata. In Pdf format.

Minimarkets are a world full of sounds. There was the ringing of the doorbell for Clatang customers and the voice of a television star advertising a new product via the shop's cable TV. There was the sound of a shop employee greeting and the sound of a barcode scanner. There was the rustling of items being put into baskets and the clicking of high-heeled shoes to and fro. These sounds combine to create a "minimarket sound" that never stops touching my eardrums.

I looked up when I heard the sound of a plastic bottle rolling into place on the sales shelf, indicating a bottle of drink had been sold. My body automatically responded to that sound because customers usually take cold drinks later before going to the cashier. I looked down at my hands again after seeing a female customer carrying mineral water still choosing dessert.

I arranged the onigiri that had just arrived while the voices in the shop conveyed information to me. On a morning like now, the best sellers are onigiri, sandwiches and salads. Over there, Sugawara, another part-time employee, was checking items with a portable scanner.

I arranged the hygienic food produced by the machine neatly on the shelves. I lined up the new mentaiko cheese product in two rows in the middle, next to it I put two rows of tuna mayonnaise which is the best seller in this shop, while okaka onigiri which is not so popular I put it at the end. I did everything almost without thinking because the main thing was speed, and what gave me orders were the rules that had been ingrained in me.

I turned to the cashier when I heard the faint clink of coins. The sound of coins in hands or in pockets usually comes from people stopping to buy cigarettes or newspapers on their way home. As I had expected, a man walked up to the cashier, carrying canned coffee in one hand and the other in his pocket. I rushed to the cashier's desk and stood alert so as not to make customers wait.

"Irasshaimase! Good morning!"

After bowing lightly, I accepted the canned coffee the man held out.
