This is a romantic and terrifying story: about the famous painter Arie Smit (1916-2Ol6) who lived an extraordinary life for 10 years.

In the midst of a rich life in Zaandam, Netherlands, Arie was suddenly sent to Indonesia as a soldier. When Japan took control of Indonesia, Arie was arrested and thrown into a prison he built himself. Arie was then made a romusa for forced labor to build the Kwai Bridge in Burma.

When Japan lost World War II and Indonesia became independent in 1945, he was happy. He really loves Indonesia. However, the Dutch ordered Arie to return to the battlefield and carry out the Occupation Action.

In Bali, Arie lives his strange artistic life: wandering everywhere, and becoming a thief of sunlight. What does it mean? Why did the army move 39 times? Why is he so respected that he is called "Mr. Ari"? Why are his paintings so expensive that they are priced per square centimeter?
