Tafsir Ibn-'Abbas

Hazrat Abdullah Bin Abbas R.A was the cousin of the Holy Prophet. He was the son of Hazrat Abbas, the uncle of the Holy Prophet. Hazrat Muhammad PBUH prayed for the increase of Hazrat Abdullah Bin Abbas’s knowledge about the Quran and Islam.

The book is one of the authentic texts on the subject of Tafseer of the Quran. Hazrat Abdullah Bin Abbas R.A listened to some of the verses and their interpretation directly from Islam’s Prophet. He also collected knowledge about the Quran from eminent companions of Rasool Allah SAW. Ibne Abbas was in that category of Sahaba, who narrated a lot Hadith of Prophet of Islam.

Hazrat Abdullah Bin Abbas called a Mufti. He was one of those companions of the Holy Prophet, which gave Fatawa about various issues. Ibne Abbas knew very well the mode of the Quran and the time of revealing.

Attributed variously to the Companion Abdullah Ibn Abbas (d. 68/687) and to Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub al-Firuzabadi (d. 817/1414), Tanwîr al-Miqbâs is one of the most pivotal works for understanding the environment which influenced the development of Qur’anic exegesis. Despite its uncertain authorship and its reliance on the controversial Isrâ’îliyyat or Israelite stories, Tanwîr al-Miqbâs nevertheless offers readers valuable insight into the circulation and exchange of popular ideas between Islam, Judaism and Christianity during the formative phase of Islamic exegesis.

About the Translator

Mr. Mokrane Guezzou is a British-Algerian translator of major Islamic works. He is currently preparing translations of Al-Wâhidî’s Asbâb al-Nuzûl (Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought) and Ibn 'Atâ Allâh al-Iskandârî’s al-Qasd al-Mujarrad îi Ma'rifat al-Ism al-Mufrad (Fons Vitae).

Hadith scholars have expressed doubts about authenticity of this collection and if it actually is from Ibn Abbas R.A. based on critical studies in 'Usool Al-Hadith' which has found many narrations in this to be weak (Reference: Dr. Bilal Philips lecture recordings on Usool Al Hadith at IOU)

ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās (Arabic: عَبْد ٱللَّٰه ٱبْن عَبَّاس; c. 619 – 687 CE), also known as Ibn ʿAbbās, was one of the cousins of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. He is considered to be the greatest mufassir of the Qur'an.

He was the son of Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib, an uncle of Muhammad, and a nephew of Maymunah bint al-Harith, who later became Muhammad's wife. During the early struggles for the caliphate he supported Ali, and was made governor of Basra. He withdrew to Mecca shortly afterwards. During the reign of Mu'awiya I he lived in Hejaz and often travelled to Damascus. After Mu'awiya I died in 680 CE he fled to at-Ta'if, where he died in around 687 CE.

'Abd Allah ibn Abbas was highly regarded for his knowledge of traditions and his critical interpretation of the Qur'an. From early on, he gathered information from other companions of Muhammad and gave classes and wrote commentaries.
