About this app

The History of Atlantis Application is an Indonesian Free Book application that contains a summary of the theory of the History of Atlantis. Atlantis, Atalantis, or Atlantika (Greek: Ἀτλαντὶς νῆσος, "island of Atlas") is the legendary island that was first mentioned by Plato in the books of Timaeus and the Critics.

In his notes, Plato wrote that Atlantis lay "beyond the pillars of Hercules", and had a navy that conquered Western Europe and Africa 9,000 years before Solon's time, or about 9500 BC. After failing to attack Greece, Atlantis sank into the ocean "in just one day and one night".

Atlantis is generally considered a myth created by Plato to illustrate political theory. Although the function of the story of Atlantis is obvious to most scholars, they debate whether and how much Plato's account was inspired by older traditions. Some scholars say that Plato described past events, such as the eruption of Thera or the Trojan war, while others claim that he was inspired by contemporary events such as the destruction of Helike in 373 BC or the failure of Athens' invasion of Sicily in 415-413 BC.

People often talk about the existence of Atlantis during the Classical Era, but generally don't believe it and sometimes make it a joke. The story of Atlantis was little known in the Middle Ages, however, in the modern era, the story of Atlantis was rediscovered. Plato's description inspired the works of Renaissance writers, such as Francis Bacon's "New Atlantis". Atlantis has also influenced modern literature, from science fiction to comic books and films. Its name has become a byword for all advanced (and lost) prehistoric civilizations.
