Fasting is one of the worships that has a great reward value in Islamic law. Even specifically, the Shari'a clearly informs about the promise of heaven which is specifically for fasting people.

From Sahal Ra: From the Prophet SAW: In heaven there is a door called the ar-Rayyan door. Those who enter through that door on the Day of Judgment are only those who fast, the others will not enter through that door. And shouted at that time, "Where are the people who fast?" So those who are fasting get up to enter it, while others do not. When they have entered, then the door is closed and no one else can enter it." (Narrated by Bukhari Muslim)

But this great worship will be in vain if it is carried out haphazardly without knowledge, and even if it can then fall into what is forbidden by Allah swt.

Like if a Muslim specializes in fasting only on Fridays without any reason or reason behind his fasting practice. It's just that, because there is a prohibition from the Prophet to specify fasting on Friday, then the fast is in vain and has no merit at all.
