About this app

This Android Application is 10 Differences Between Zakat Maal and Zakat Fitr. In PDF format.

Author : Isnan Ansory, Lc. M.Ag.

If observed, there is a misunderstanding in the midst of Muslim society regarding the obligation to pay zakat which is mentioned a lot in the Qur'an and is often accompanied by the obligation to perform the five daily prayers.

Among the Muslims there are those who understand that the zakat referred to in the five pillars of Islam is simply zakat fithri. Even though some of them have abundant wealth; hectares of gardens whose regular income can reach tens or even hundreds of millions of rupiah, or those who have productive businesses whose turnover can reach tens of millions of rupiah.

However, because there was a mistake in understanding the nature of zakat - which during the time of the caliph Abu Bakar ash-Shiddiq he fought against those who refused to pay it -, they felt that it was enough just to pay zakat fithri which was only 2.5 kg of rice each year.

And it is believed to be the only obligation of zakat which is obligatory in religion upon them.

Even though the obligation of a Muslim who is able to pay zakat includes two types of zakat, namely zakat maal and zakat fitrah.

On the other hand, there are not a few Muslims who believe that the obligation to pay zakat maal only applies to the month of Ramadan. Even though the obligatory zakat during the month of Ramadan is limited to zakat fithri or the obligation of zakat which is due (haul) to be paid in the month of Ramadan. As for other types of zakat maal, the payment due date may occur in other months.

And finally, because of this misunderstanding, not a few Muslims have fallen into error in the time of paying zakat maal. Even though the scholars agree that delaying the payment of zakat maal until it is past its due date is prohibited.

On this basis, it is appropriate to know what are the differences between zakat maal and zakat fitrah. With the hope that these misunderstandings can be avoided and the practice of paying zakat is not wrong or does not conflict with the provisions of the Shari'a.
