20 Kaidah Paham Riba

Before discussing the rules of usury, we need to first understand an important issue, namely what exactly is meant by usurious goods?

We say that some of the ribawi items have been explained by the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam. And some others have been added by the ulama' because of the similarity in terms of the riba items that the prophet mentioned, such as gold, silver, fine wheat, coarse wheat, dates, salt and wine.

In the Ma'mar hadith in Muslim history, it is stated that the prophet said, "Food exchanged for food must be the same." Do ribawiyah items only consist of the names that the prophet mentioned or every item that has characteristics like the items the prophet mentioned?

First opinion: The Dzahiriyah say that ribawiyah items are only the names that the Prophet had mentioned. As for anything other than that, it does not include ribawiyah goods. This is the opinion of Ibn Uqail from the Hambali madzhab.

Second opinion: That ribawiyah goods are not only limited to goods mentioned by the prophet, but also include every item that has similar characteristics to the goods mentioned by the prophet. From this opinion, the ulama then differed in their opinions regarding the ilat (cause/reason) for the goods mentioned by the prophet so that they were called ribawi goods.

As we mentioned earlier, the Prophet mentioned ribawiyah goods in the form of gold, silver, fine wheat, coarse wheat, dates and salt.


Hopefully this book will be useful for Muslims and will be a good deed that will increase the balance of goodness for all of us.
