The emergence of the term Tarawih

The word Tarawih is the plural form of single Tarwiih. And Tarwiih is a form of mashdar (adjective/ work product) from the verb Rawwaha – Yurawwihu.

And it turns out that the term was not known by the Prophet s.a.w., and at least by Abu Bakr r.a. Also. Because in the past, the Prophet s.a.w. call it not by the term tarawih, but by the name Qiyam Ramadhan, namely the livelihood of the night of Ramadan. The meaning of worship is to live the nights of Ramadan.

So, the emergence of the name tarawih as a term used by many or almost all scholars to refer to the sunnah prayers of the night of Ramadan, there could be several possibilities.

One of them is what happened when Umar bin al-Khathtab was in office. Namely from the history of Imam al-Marwadzi in his book Qiyam Ramadhan.

From al-Hasan Rahimahullah. Umar r.a. ordered Ubai to be the imam on Qiyam Ramadhan, and they slept in the first quarter of the night. Then pray 2/4 of the night after that. And finished in the last ¼ of the night, they went home and had breakfast. They recite 5 to 6 verses in each cycle. And pray with 18 cycles of greeting every 2 cycles, and give them a break just to do ablution and fulfill their needs.
