A well-known hadith related to intentions is a hadith from the narration of Sayyidina Umar bin Khaththab r.a., which was recorded by many hadith narrators, one of whom is Imam al-BUkhari.

Indeed charity depends on intention.

And everyone gets a reply according to his intention. Who intends with his emigration for the world he is after or for the woman he wants to marry; then his migration according to what he intended. (Narrated by Bukhari) Most scholars call this hadith a very important hadith in Islamic law.

In fact, it is from this hadith that many sharia laws spin; because indeed the intention ranks highest in every worship carried out by Muslims. So, like it or not, there is a demand for us to continuously improve our intentions so that the worship that is carried out will get results that will not disappoint later in the afterlife when the charity is broadcast.

Because of the importance of this hadith intention, Imam Abu Daud said that this hadith is equivalent to half the teachings of religion, and called it nishfu al-Islam; half Islamic. That's because there are 2 Islamic sharia teachings; the zahir teachings, namely the charity of the body, and also the inner teachings, namely the intention.

Different but not contradictory to Imam Abu Daud, Imam al-Shafi'i refers to this hadith as a third of Islamic teachings. That's because it's the way humans worship Allah s.w.t. and get rewarded; whether it be with the heart, verbal or body. And the reward that can be generated from the heart is with good intentions. (al-Wafi fi Syarh al-'Arbain al-Nawawi p. 12)

That's why many scholars place this hadith as the opening book of their books, especially the books of hadith collectors. Imam al-Bukhari placed this hadith as the first hadith in his Sahih. Imam Nawawi, in the 3 hadith books he compiled; Riyadhul-Shalihin, Al-Adzkar and al-Arba'in, put this hadith as the opening intention for all of his books.

Of course there are aims and objectives to be addressed when the scholars place this hadith as an opener; that is to warn as well as appeal to all of us; the claimants of knowledge and rewards to improve the quality of intention in the heart so that the reward does not run away in the end because of bad intentions.
