1. The obligatory chapter of Ramadan Fasting

And the word of Allah ta'ala, "O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you so that you may be pious." (QS. Al-Baqarah: 183).

Musaddad has told us: Isma'il told us, from Ayyub, from Nafi', from Ibn 'Umar radhiyallahu 'anhuma, he said: The Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam used to fast the day of Ashura and he ordered the Muslims to fast on the day That. However, when the Ramadan fast was made obligatory, the Ashura fast was abandoned. And 'Abdullah Ibn 'Umar did not fast on the day of Ashura unless it coincided with his routine sunnah fast.

Qutaibah bin Sa'id has told us: Al-Laits told us, from Yazid bin Abu Habib: That 'Irak bin Malik told him: That 'Urwah informed him, from 'Aisyah radhiyallahu 'anha: That the Quraysh used to fast the day of Ashura in the time of ignorance. Then the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam ordered the Muslims to fast the day of Ashura until the fast of Ramadan was made obligatory. The Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam said, "Whoever wants to fasts and whoever wants to, he can not fast."

2. Chapter of the Virtue of Fasting

'Abdullah bin Maslamah has told us, from Malik, from Abuz Zinad, from Al-A'raj, from Abu Hurairah radhiyallahu 'anhu: That Rasulullah shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam said, "Fasting is a shield. When one of you is fasting, let him not speak dirty words and act foolishly. If someone invites him to fight or criticize him, say: 'Really I am fasting', twice. By Allah, in Whose Hands my soul is, truly the smell of the mouth of a fasting person is more fragrant in the sight of Allah Ta'ala than the smell of musk. He is willing to leave his food, drink, and lust because of Me. Fasting is for me and I myself will repay it. One kindness is rewarded tenfold."

3. Chapter Fasting is a Penance

'Ali bin 'Abdullah has told us: Sufyan told us: Jami' told us, from Abu Wa`il, from Hudzaifah, he said: 'Umar radhiyallahu 'anhu asked: Who memorized the hadith from the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa greetings about the exam? Hudzaifah said: I heard him say, "A person's test is in his family, wealth and neighbors, which will be erased by prayer, fasting and alms." 'Umar said: That is not what I asked. What I'm asking about the test is as bumpy as the ocean is surging.
