South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea, also known simply as Korea, is a country in
East Asia, located in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. Its only land border is with
North Korea, with which it formed only one country until 1945. It is bordered to the east by
the Sea of Japan, to the south by the Korea Strait, which separates it from Japan, and to the
west by the Yellow Sea. Its territory comprises the southern half of the Korean peninsula,
encompassing around three thousand islands that surround it, among which Jeju, Ulleungdo
and the Liancourt Rocks (Dokdo) stand out. The country's capital and largest city is Seoul,
whose metropolitan area is the second most populous in the world (behind only the
metropolitan area of Tokyo, Japan).
