Rio de Janeiro is a Brazilian municipality, capital of the homonymous state, located in the
Southeast of the country. Largest international tourist destination in Brazil, in Latin America
and in the entire Southern Hemisphere (in 2008), the capital of Rio de Janeiro is the
best-known Brazilian city abroad, functioning as a national "mirror" or "portrait", whether
positively or negatively . It is the second largest metropolis in Brazil (after São Paulo), the
sixth largest in America and the thirty-fifth in the world. Its population estimated by the IBGE
for the 2022 census was 6,211,423 inhabitants. It has the epithet of Cidade Maravilhosa, and
those born in it are called cariocas.
