Grigol Khandzteli was born in the family of an honorable family living at the door of Nerses II of Eristavi, Kartli. He was raised by his aunt - Nerse Eristavi's wife.
By his time Gregory had received an excellent education.

Growing up according to Christian rules, he observed fasting, did not touch wine and meat, walked in a monastic garb, and was present in solitude, which is why he was called a prisoner.
