Louis Segond was a Protestant pastor and theologian born in Geneva in 1810. At the request of the Company of Pastors of Geneva, he translated the Bible into French from the original texts in Hebrew and Greek.

His version quickly reached a large audience within Protestantism, with great success and many copies published.

The first publication of his translation of the Old Testament is dated 1874 and that of the New Testament in 1880.
