The tico-tico is a passerine bird in the Passerellidae family. It is one of the best known and most esteemed birds in Brazil. Its name comes from Tupi and derives from its call. This bird and the sparrow are two common species in urban areas and many people confuse them despite having easily noticeable differences. Among the known popular names, the following stand out: salta-caminho (Pernambuco and interior of Paraíba), titiquinha and ticão, gitica, mariquita-tio-tio (São Paulo), tiquinho (Paraná), catete, cata-pestle, jesus- meu-deus (Bahia), chuvinha (South of Piauí), toinho (Paraíba - Western Seridó region) and piqui-meu-deus (south of Ceará), and also tico-tico-jesus-meu-deus.
