Canto do Tiziu

The tiziu is a passerine bird in the Thraupidae family. Also known as tizirro, jumper, velor, papa-rice, pile-driver (Rio de Janeiro), sawyer, saw-saw and tailor.



Its scientific name means: from (Latin) volatinia diminutive of volatus = flight, small flight; and do (tupi) jacarini = the one that flies up and down. ⇒ Short flight bird that flies up and down. This reference is peculiar to the type of flight practiced by this bird, which, while jumping up and landing in the same place of origin, emits its characteristic song “ti” “ti” “tiziu”.
