About this game

You’re enjoying a writing retreat held in an Australian small town when one of your fellow writers is killed, and all the rest are suspects—including you. The ancient rectory grants you curious supernatural powers, and it’s not clear if the magic is benign or malevolent. Can you figure out who the killer is before they take another victim? Is the rectory the real killer? Or is this the ultimate chance to find out for yourself what it feels like to murder another person—and get away with it?

DEATH AT THE RECTORY is an 87,000 word interactive magical murder mystery by Felicity Banks, where your choices control the story. It’s entirely text-based—without graphics or sound effects—and fuelled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.

Are you attracted to the vivacious Indonesian woman or the charming American man? Do you dare to fall in love when the object of your affection might be a murderer? Will your word count survive the stress of being a murder suspect? Will you ever get a turn in the shower?

• Choose from three genders, and whatever sexuality suits your mood.
• Pay attention to the clues, as the murderer is not the same in every play-through.
• Who do you suspect, and who do you trust?
• Pick a genre, hero, and ending for your own novel outline.
• Gather clues to make your case to your fellow writers.
• Can you get away with murder?

This story starts off strong and has a lot of promise. I liked the idea of a mystery coupled with magic. However, after certain events about halfway through the story becomes incredibly rushed. There is almost no explanation as to why the events took place and the ending lacks any sort of conclusion. Literally you solve (or don't solve) the mystery and two pages later the story ends. All in all, not worth paying for.

Needed more proof reading--syntax and spelling errors abound. Gave you LOTS of choices over relatively low value items, but none in more important scenes. The magic in the house just seemed glommed on, and the character arcs did not make sense. The author took great pains with the bits detailing food allergies, anxiety issues, depression or ADD. I wanted to like this better than I did---the premise had potential, it just needed more polish.

Yikes! As you can tell from other reviews this game is rough. Characters are all intriguing and I fell in love with Renee and Lala personally. Yet... I was left wanting more the entire way through. Paying the three dollars only to have the game finish moments later is like a solid slap in the face. I'm a big fan of Choice and Hosted. I've read tons of their works and this falls very low on the totem pole. You never even get to find out how your novel turns out
