About this app

THE NET BIBLE®, New English Translation
Copyright © 1996-2020 Bible.org
All rights reserved.
The NET Bible is a completely new translation of the Bible. It was completed by more than 25 scholars – experts in the original biblical languages – who worked directly from the best currently available Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts.
The NET Bible project was commissioned to create a faithful Bible translation that could be placed on the Internet, downloaded for free, and used around the world for ministry. The Bible is God’s gift to humanity – it should be free. Permission is available for the NET Bible to be printed royalty-free for organizations like the The Gideons International who print and distribute Bibles for charity. The NET Bible (with all the translators’ notes) has also been provided to Wycliffe Bible Translators to assist their field translators. The NET Bible Society is working with other groups and Bible Societies to provide the NET Bible translators’ notes to complement fresh translations in other languages.

I am noticing that some reviews are related to the NET translation and some for the app. I am rating the app, not the translation. Four stars because it is very easy to use and makes it easy to check the translation notes, which is the distinctive feature of the NET translation. I took a star off because although the search feature is very fast, it lacks granularity. For a text the size of the Bible search is not very helpful unless there is a way to filter/sort the query.

It's okay. Simple app that works well, but lacks a few key features, such as continuous scrolling between chapters (they are only artificial divisions anyway), the inability to select or highlight partial verses, and a complete lack of the extensive translator notes the NET translation is known for.

Easy to use app, an A. Talked with the developers and translators at Society of Biblical Literature convention for years while this was in the works. Theologically I found them a bit to my right, but they were dedicated to using the best texts available (some conservatives insist the text behind the KJV – which is filled with later additions – must be God's word. Nope, this is based on best texts available. If it doesn't have a verse the KJV has, the KJV, based on the Greek text of Erasmus is the problem, not the 'real' version. A+ for that. Human language is not literal, it is filled with figures of speech. I think the NET leans a bit too much for translating idioms literally instead of looking for the modern English idiom, B+ there. There is no perfect Bible translation, but this is darn good.
