Naayanmaargal Tamil - 63 Nayanmargal -நாயன்மார்கள்

"Naayanmaars" or Naayanaars are the soul maniac of Lord Shiva and they are 63. “Naayanaars” and “Alwars” are the contemporary reciprocates of 6th to 8th centuries, the former was the devotees of Lord Shiva and the later were the devotees of Lord Vishnu. The Naayanmaargal were from various backgrounds, Channars, Vellalas, Oilmongers, Brahmins, and nobles. Along with the twelve Vaishnava Alvars, they are regarded as the important saints from Tamil Nadu.

Raja Raja Chola-I a forte monarch commence on a mission to recoup the “Thevaram” melodic hymns which he heard in his court. He calls on Nambiyandar Nambi, with the help of him he found that the scripts are locked in a chamber near Thillai. The written Scripts were almost eroded by insects and the leftover Scripts were collected and organized by Nambi.

Nambi arranged the hymns as follows:
first seven books about the three saint poets Sambandar, Appar, and Sundarar,
the 8th book - Manickavasagar's Tirukovayar and Tiruvacakam,
the 9th book - 28 hymns of nine other saints,
the Tirumandiram of Tirumular as the 10th book,
the 10th book - 40 hymns by 12 other poets,
The 11th book - Tirutotanar, Tiruvanthathi - the sacred Anthathi of the labors of the 63 Naayanaar saints and added his hymns.

The first, seven books were later called Tevaram, and the whole Saiva canon, to which was added, as the 12th book, Sekkizhar's Periya Puranam (1135) is wholly known as Tirumurai, the holy book. Sekkizhar added a twelfth volume to the Tirumurai called Periya Puranam in which he expanded further on the stories of each of 63 Naayanaars.
