Volgograd is a Russian city of Cossack origin located along the right bank of the lower course of the Volga River, immediately downstream of the reservoir of the same name (3165 km²). Served by numerous rolling stock and railway lines and the Volga-Don waterway (opened in 1952), it stretches over 65km along the Volga, encompassing several nearby industrial centers, including Beketovka and Krasnoarmejsk. Airport. Until 1925 it was called Caricyn (or Tsaritsin); from 1925 to 1961 Stalingrad; in 1992 it took back the old name of Caricyn, changed to Volgograd in 1998. § Cossack advanced post in the 10th century. XVII, Caricyn developed in the following centuries, becoming then a railway junction of great importance and a large industrial center. Developed mainly as a commercial center and river port on the road connecting the Volga basin with the Donbass, it is still home to important metallurgical (aluminum) and iron and steel complexes, including the "Red October" steel mills founded in 1897 as Ural-Volga foundries, shipyards and petrochemicals.
