About this app

St. Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia by size and population, a federal city, the most important port in the country and also the northernmost city with more than one million inhabitants in the world. Founded by Tsar Peter the Great (1672-1725) on the Neva delta, where the river flows into the bay of the same name in the Gulf of Finland, it was for a long time the capital of the Russian Empire, a function which it lost on March 5, 1918. On 1 September 1914 at the behest of Tsar Nicholas II it was renamed Petrograd and kept this name until 26 January 1924; when (five days after Lenin's death) the city was renamed Leningrad. It kept this name until 6 September 1991, when it returned to its original name. Since 1997, following a declaration by Boris Yeltsin, the city has been publicly recognized as the country's cultural capital.
