Mahmoud Ali Al-Banna was an Egyptian Quran reciter whose life and journey are rich in meaningful experiences. Mahmoud Al Banna was born on December 17, 1926 in the village of Choubrabas, located in the heart of Shebin Al Koum, in the prefecture of Munufiya, in the north of Egypt. A Banna began his spiritual and educational journey from a young age.
His quest to master the Quran led him to the Quranic school in his village, where he received instruction from Sheikh Moussa Almnattash. At the remarkable age of 11, Mahmoud Al Banna had already accomplished the complete learning of the Quran. In search of deeper knowledge, he then headed to the city of Tanta, where he undertook the study of religious sciences at the Ahmadi Mosque. There, Al Banna also learned the various readings of the Quran under the benevolent guidance of Imam Ibrahim bin Salam AL Maliki.
His passion for spirituality and music led him to Cairo in 1945, where he began studying music and Maqams with Sheikh Darwish Al-Hariri. In 1947, Mahmoud Ali Al Banna became the reciter of the Muslim Youth Association, playing a central role in the association's festivities. The following year, his growing reputation caught the attention of eminent personalities, such as Maher Pasha and Prince Abdelkrim EL Khatabi, who encouraged him to join Egyptian radio. In 1948, Mahmoud Al Banna made his debut on Egyptian radio, broadcasting his first recitation live in December of that year. His exceptional talent quickly elevated him to the rank of the most renowned reciters in Egypt.
Towards the end of the forties, Sheikh Mahmoud Ali AL Banna was honored with the role of reciter at the 'Ain EL Hayat' mosque, followed by a similar position at the 'Al Imam Rafi'i' mosque in the late fifties. In 1959, Al Banna moved to Tanta, becoming the reciter of 'Al Ahmadi' Mosque until 1980. From that date, Mahmoud Al Banna started reciting the Quran at 'Al Imam Al Hussein' Mosque ' until his disappearance.
Sheikh Mahmoud Ali Al Banna's legacy is reflected in the radio recordings he left behind, including the Quran Muratal recorded in 1967 and the Quran Mujawad. His recitations of the Quran Muratal have also been broadcast by radio stations in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
His devotion has led him to visit many Muslim countries as well as various nations around the world. Mahmoud Al Banna shared the teachings of the Quran at iconic locations such as Mecca, Al Haram Al Qudsi, the Umayyad Mosque, and even the Berlin Mosque in 1978.
As a zealous supporter of the creation of the readers' union, Sheikh Al Banna was appointed vice-president when it was founded in 1984. His life came to an end on July 20, 1985, and he was buried in the sanctuary of the mosque of his native village, Shoubrabas.
