The Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage in Kraljevo was founded in 1965 to study heritage in the territory of 17 municipalities of the Kraljevo county. In 1969 the Department of Education and Culture of the Republic of Serbia and the Republic’s Association for Culture expanded tasks of the Institute to include the municipalities that belong to the former county of Titovo Užice. Since that time the Institute has been active in the territory of the following municipalities: Aleksandrovac, Arilje, Bajina Bašta,Brus, Varvarin, Vrnjačka Banja, Gornji Milanovac, Ivanjica, Kosjerić, Kraljevo, Kruševac, Lučani, Nova Varoš, Novi Pazar, Priboj, Prijepolje, Raška, Sjenica, (Titovo) Užice, Trstenik, Tutin, (Užička) Požega, Ćićevac, Čajetina, and Čačak.
The total of 321 cultural properties (cultural monuments, spatial cultural and historical compounds, archaeological sites and landmarks) have been identified in this territory which are covered by in the definition of the immovable cultural heritage based on the Law on Cultural Properties.
