Building on an island

We are working on the track in and around Amsterdam Central station. The station is built on an island.

Amsterdam Central Station is one of the busiest stations in the Netherlands with 200,000 travelers every day. This number will continue to rise to approximately 275,000 in 2030. More space is therefore needed for travelers and trains. For this reason, the station and the tracks are being thoroughly renovated.

What do we do? A selection of the activities:

- There will be more entrances to the platforms.
- The Eastern passenger tunnel will be widened.
- We are widening and extending the current platforms.
- There will be an additional bicycle shed next to the eastern passenger tunnel: extra space for 8,500 bicycles.
- We are building a free crossing on the Dijksgracht so that trains can pass each other without waiting.
- The steel railway bridges on the east side of the station are being replaced one by one.
- The tracks are all adjusted.

When the work is completed in 2030, travelers will be able to take a train every ten minutes between the major cities in the Randstad. There is also more space for freight transport. In this way we connect Amsterdam with the rest of the Netherlands, and the Netherlands with the rest of Europe.

We work together with various contractors: BAM, Strukton, Dura Vermeer, K_Dekker, Anton Rail&Infra and with engineering firms Movares and Arcadis. Architectural firm ZJA is responsible for the designs for the station.
