This free app presents locations and events that have played a key role in shaping Berlin’s image as the city of freedom.

ABOUT BERLIN also takes you off the beaten track. Why? Because very few people know what lies behind these seemingly nondescript places – living history, fascinating stories, unknown aspects of politics, society and history in different periods.

When you use the app, you can work your way through seven periods of Berlin history from 1871 to the present day and on into the future, or you can select individual stories and locations to explore.
Short introductions to each location encourage you to read the whole story and check out the links. Many locations also feature audio files and videos, making ABOUT BERLIN a truly multimedia experience. You don’t need any previous knowledge of history to use the app, but history buffs will also love the way the app sheds light on little-known events and throws up surprising nuggets of information. Taking you on a journey back in time, the stories are meticulously researched and written in a captivating way. Every Berlin tour guide and city app can reel off facts and figures, but they can’t portray the places that reflect a whole era through the lives of Berliners and their love of freedom. Each location provides a fresh opportunity to tell the story of Berlin in a brand-new way. The list of locations includes well-known sights in the city centre, such as the Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate and Alexanderplatz, but also lesser-known places with equally fascinating stories to tell.
The ABOUT BERLIN app currently gives visitors to Berlin a choice of 200 hand-picked destinations. They all shed new light on the lives of Berlin’s residents at different times in history. The stories span the period from 1871 to the present day and look ahead to the future. More fascinating stories about Berlin will be added as time goes on.
