The text is divided into three books, each with aphoristic teachings on
1) Virtue (aram, dharma) - dealing with moral values of an individual
2) Wealth (porul, artha) - dealing with socio-economic values
3) Love (inbam, kama) - dealing with psychological values and love
The term Tirukkural is a compound word made of two individual terms, tiru and kural.
1) Tiru is an honorific Tamil term that corresponds to the universally Indian, Sanskrit term sri meaning "holy, sacred, excellent, honorable, and beautiful.
2) Kural means something that is "short, concise, and abridged.
The Kural text was authored by Thiruvalluvar.
The Kural is structured into 133 chapters, each containing 10 couplets (or kurals), for a total of 1,330 couplets.
