About Bell Signals (Signalling)

Signal Bells by Network Rail has been developed to assist signallers in learning all 56 bell codes across the following regulations: Absolute block (AB), Track circuit block (TCB) and General signalling regulations (GSR). Signallers must learn each code's bell pattern and respective description.

Learning the bell codes
· You will be able to browse through the bell codes by selecting each category from the “Learn the codes” button, with the option to toggle between a list view and card view.

Practicing the bell codes
· Practice the codes consists of 4 mini games that have been developed to assist in reinforcing the bell code knowledge. These include Code Matcher, Fill in the blank, Join the dots and Ring the bell.

Mini game - Code Matcher
· To play Code Matcher, you must first select one of the three groups of questions. To play Code Matcher, select the correct description from the list of options to match the bell code presented. There is only one correct description for each bell code. All three question groups must be completed with 100% accuracy to complete the game.

Mini game - Fill in the blank
· To play Fill in the blank, you must first select one of the three groups of questions. To play Fill in the blank, enter the correct bell code that matches the bell code description presented, using your device's keyboard. The dashes between the bell code pattern will be automatically generated for you. All three question groups must be completed with 100% accuracy to complete the game.

Mini game - Join the Dots
· To play Join the Dots, you must first select one of the three groups of questions. You’ll need to match the bell code presented on the left of your screen, to the correct description on the right, by tapping each box to create a line and join the dots together. All three question groups must be completed with 100% accuracy to complete the game.

Mini game - Ring the Bell
· To play Ring the Bell, you must first select one of the three groups of questions. The aim of this game is to recreate the respective bell code sound to the description provided, by using the ‘bell’ and ‘pause’ buttons, respectively. The ‘bell’ button will create a single bell sound, and the ‘pause’ button will provide the dashes between the bell repetitions. Tab the “bell” button as many times as needed to recreate the bell sound, to match the numerical representation of the matching bell code. All three question groups must be completed with 100% accuracy to complete the game.

What is a Bell IQ?
· The Bell IQ is our scoring method to indicate how well you have learnt the bell codes. The Bell IQ is calculated based on completing all the mini games with a 100% success rate. You can improve your score by playing the mini games and completing each one successfully, even if you have previously failed to.
