Long ago in ancient India, merchants, travellers and armada travelled thousands of nautical in the sea to various countries. This is before the invention of modern compass and magnets.
They used an oil filled vessel, and then floated on it, an iron fish shaped needle. The needle had been static charged by rubbing it on hair or wool. We know now that static electricity, like magnets creates north and south poles on the needle. This compass was used to travel long distances.
