About Michigan Sheriffs’ Association

The Michigan Sheriffs’ Association (MSA), established in 1877, is the oldest law enforcement organization in Michigan, providing over 147 years of leadership in education, training, and community programs. It serves as the unified voice for the state’s 83 Sheriff’s Offices, representing their concerns and ensuring that the Office of Sheriff maintains its vital role as the chief elected law enforcement officer at the county level.

Through its mission, the MSA works toward key goals such as improving professional standards in policing, implementing education programs related to evolving law enforcement issues, enhancing traffic and public safety, deterring crime with state and local prevention initiatives, and addressing mutual concerns in correctional facilities. The organization also plays an essential role in monitoring legislation, court decisions, and state funding that impact local law enforcement operations.

MSA tackles critical community safety issues, including Safe Schools, Teenage Driver Safety, Identity Theft, Homeland Security, Senior Citizen Safety, Victim Service Teams, Mental Health, and Line of Duty Death Assistance. It remains committed to supporting its members and advocating for effective policies that ensure the safety and well-being of Michigan’s citizens.

The Michigan Sheriffs’ Association is dedicated to preserving the integrity and public understanding of the Office of Sheriff while offering invaluable resources to criminal justice professionals and the public. It prides itself on ethical fundraising, never soliciting donations via telephone or employing questionable tactics. Through its long history, MSA continues to lead in shaping the future of law enforcement in Michigan.
