The game "Dog Jump" (also known by similar names such as "Dog Jump" or "Sijja") is one of the oldest and most popular brain games in Sudan, relying entirely on strategic planning and quick thinking.
Game Details
Playing Board: A square grid consisting of 25 (5x5) squares is dug or drawn in the sand.
Equipment: The stones used are called "dogs." Each player has 12 stones (dogs) of a different color than their opponent (e.g., light stones against dark stones, or date seeds against pebbles).
Starting Placement: Each player places their 12 stones in the squares on their side, leaving the central square empty to begin moving.
How to Play:
Movement is done in turns, with each player moving their stone to an adjacent empty square (horizontally or vertically).
Jumping (Eating): If an opponent's stone is in an adjacent square with an empty square behind it, you can "jump" over it to reach that empty square. In this case, the opponent's piece is removed from the game.
Consecutive "jumps" can be performed in a single turn if the position of the pieces allows.
Objective of the Game
The main objective is to remove all of the opponent's "dogs" (pieces) from the board by jumping over them. The game ends with the player who has any pieces left on the ground after eliminating their opponent's pieces winning.
This game is a great way to strengthen social bonds and is often played in community gatherings where spectators come together to cheer on the players.
