Reggae is a musical genre that first developed in Jamaica in the mid-1960s. Although the term is often used extensively to refer to different styles of Jamaican music, reggae is understood strictly as a musical genre Specific that originated as development of previous ones like ska and rocksteady.

Reggae is rhythmically characterized by a type of accentuation of the off-beat, known as skank. Normally, reggae time is slower than ska3 and rocksteady. Reggae usually accentuates the second and fourth beat of each beat, and uses the guitar to either emphasize the third beat or to keep the chord from the second to the fourth. It is generally this "third beat", both for speed and for the use of complex bass lines, which differentiates reggae from rocksteady.

The Wailers, a band formed by Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer in 1963, are perhaps the most well-known group that made the transition through the three stages the first Jamaican popular music: ska, rocksteady and reggae. Other reggae pioneers include Prince Buster, Desmond Dekker, Jackie Mittoo and Annie Acosta.
Reggae is a musical genre of Jamaican origin (the Jamaican adjective applies to people). The term reggae is sometimes used extensively to refer to most Jamaican rhythms, including ska, rocksteady and dub. The term is more specifically used to indicate a particular style that originated after the development of rocksteady. In this sense, reggae includes three sub-genres: Skinhead Reggae, roots reggae and dancehall.

The term reggae is a derivation of ragga, which in turn is an abbreviation of raggamuffin, which in English means literally ragged. This label was used to name the poor of Jamaica, and also to the Rastas and to the cultural movements of the slums. Currently it is generally called ragga or raggamuffin to some sub-styles of reggae. Other sources point out that the term reggae comes from a song by The Maytals, called "Do the reggay", in which the word "reggay" would mean "regular", that is, ordinary people. Today, this rhythm is widely spread throughout the world, and residents of neighboring islands such as the islands of San Andrés and Providencia in Colombia interpret it as their own music.
