Learn how to quickly & accurately assess the heart's ejection fraction by eye!
This app is designed to help the beginning cardiographic sonographer to quickly and accurately assess the left ventricular ejection by eye, by providing many echo video clips showing vetted EF percentages ranging from 10% to 75%.
In the hospital setting, many times after the patient has undergone a surgical heart procedure (e.g. aortic valve replacement) or had a heart attack (NSTEMI) a request for an echo is made primarily to find out what the patient's ejection fraction is. You might be asked during or after the TTE exam what you think the ejection fraction is by the team responsible for the patient's care or the cardiologist who is awaiting the images.
In all honestly an echo tech is not required to provide an answer as if may differ from the actual report made by the attending cardiologist. However, I believe it is to the patients benefit, especially in an emergent situation that the team has the lead time to prepare for treatment change based on his ejection fraction. Personally, I would preface any statement with " I think the ejection fraction is AROUND xx% to xx% (give a range of 10% around the number you see, NOT a specific number) however i am calling the cardiologist now to alert him of what I think and you can contact him for what he is calling the EF in his report"
The video clips shown in this app with the corresponding ejection fraction are the actual reported EF, however I must point out one caveat that in my experience the visual ejection fraction may vary as much as 10% depending on the cardiologist reading it from another cardiologist's perspective between the EF numbers of 25% to 70%.
However, almost all the many cardiologists that I have worked with, perceive the extreme ends of the ejection fraction ( 10% or lower and 75% and higher) the same way.
Despite the variances, I believe this app will prove very helpful in training your eyes to better approximate the heart's ejection fraction.
If you have found this app to be helpful, a positive review would be awesome and greatly appreciated!
