About Magazine Réalités

The weekly “Réalités”, flagship of the Maghreb Media group, was founded in January 1979. Very quickly it established itself as a newspaper committed to freedoms. The independence that characterizes its editorial line has cost it a heavy price: 4 suspensions of 6 months each, frequent seizures from newsstands during the years 1982-1987 and multiple political trials, not to mention financial pressures of all kinds. From 1987 to 2010, “Réalités” had to undergo all possible political and financial pressure to get it to change its editorial line and align itself, like the almost majority of media outlets, with official policy.
Our determination to maintain our independence and enjoy the respect of our readership has resulted in repeated tensions with those in power, materialized by seizures of numbers, trials and heavy financial penalties. Notably in 1988 with the publication of the article by Hichem Djaïet on “Democracy and counter-power”, in 1992 with the file devoted to Moncef Ben Ali involved in drug trafficking “The couscous connection” or even the investigation into prisons signed by journalist Hédi Yahmed in 2002 following which the author of the article was forced into exile. Had it not been for the support of national and international public opinion and the courage of the team, “Réalités” would have disappeared from the media landscape. This did not dampen the group's determination to continue its fight for freedoms and to maintain its independence and credibility, which proved very useful after the revolution.
Today, “Réalités”, thanks to the professionalism of its team, is the reference newspaper for the Tunisian elite and the most reliable source of information for international observers. The “Réalités online” site, which was launched in 2014 in a new, more attractive format, is today ranked among the most visited sites in Tunisia, targeting more young people.
Our motto will always be the defense of freedom of expression, this great achievement of the January 14 revolution - but still threatened - and this in strict compliance with journalistic ethics.
