The Water Margin is a chapter-style novel compiled by Shi Naian in the late Yuan and early Ming Dynasty (most of the existing journals are signed by Shi Naian and Luo Guanzhong, or both).

Through the description of the grand story of Liangshan heroes resisting oppression, Shuibo Liangshan's growth and being recruited by the Song Dynasty, and the final demise of the Song Dynasty after being recruited, it artistically reflects the entire process of the Songjiang Uprising in Chinese history from its occurrence, development to its failure. It profoundly revealed the social roots of the uprising, enthusiastically praised the resistance struggles of the heroes of the uprising and their social ideals, and specifically revealed the inherent historical reasons for the failure of the uprising.

The Water Margin is one of the four classic Chinese classics. After its publication, it has had a huge impact in society and has become a model of Chinese novel creation in later generations. The Water Margin is one of the earliest chapter stories written in vernacular in Chinese history. It has been widely spread and is well-known. It is also one of the works with epic characteristics in Chinese language and literature, and has a profound influence on narrative literature in China and even East Asia.
