CSULB Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden, College of Health and Human Services
The Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden, hosted within the College of Health and Human Services at CSULB, is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, operating under the California State University Long Beach Foundation. Our mission is "to provide a place of refuge, beauty and learning for all who enter its gates." The garden was founded in 1981 and is celebrating its 40th year of service to the community. Our current strategic priorities revolve around five thematic priorities: Preservation, Visibility, Education, Art and Culture, and Health and Wellness. These priorities are helping us shape the future of the garden to a more community centric, inclusive place to experience health, tranquility, culture and community.
The garden is a living museum, and each plant and hardscape feature is a part of our collection. We strive to use our resources to improve academic excellence across campus and create a learning environment for students and the community. The garden is a founding member of the North American Japanese Gardens Association, and holds membership in American Alliance of Museums, American Horticultural Society, North American Reciprocal Museums Association, California Association of Museums, and American Public Garden Associations.
