Samsung's Galaxy Watch 5 doesn't break new ground in the world of smartwatches, but it is the best Android watch you can buy right now. It has a bigger battery compared to last year's models, a more durable design and a new temperature sensor -- but you can't use it yet. It looks and feels much the same as last year's Galaxy Watch 4, so it's definitely an iterative update rather than a major overhaul.

The $279 Galaxy Watch 5 and the $450 Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, which I have previously evaluated, are the two different models of this year's watch. They have much of the same features in common, with the exception of their build, sports modes, and battery capacity. There isn't a compelling reason to upgrade from a Galaxy Watch 4 unless you desire a bigger watch with the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro or marginally longer battery life with any of the new models. The software is much the same as it was last year, but maybe more significantly, the beloved rotating bezel found on the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic is gone.

Although the Pixel Watch and a slew of other Wear OS watches, including the $1,290 Montblanc Summit 3, are soon to arrive, this is currently the greatest Android watch. A Samsung phone is necessary to use some of the company's main health functions, such as the electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG).

The Galaxy Watch 5 doesn't appear all that different from the standard Watch 4 of last year. But the watch now fits more comfortably because the underside is snugger on your wrist. Similar to last year, it comes in sizes of 40 millimeters and 44 millimeters.

The major physical change is the lack of a rotating physical bezel, which has been a staple of the Galaxy Watch line since the first model was released in 2018. The Galaxy Watch 5 employs a software-based touch bezel in its place, which forces you to move your finger around the display's edge to navigate. The watch also includes two physical buttons on the side and the button rests on top of the touchscreen itself.

The Galaxy Watch 4 model from the previous year operated in the same way, but it also included a Classic version that had a real bezel. Funny enough, Samsung's website currently lists the older Galaxy Watch 4 Classic for sale for a price that is higher than the current model. The touch bezel works fine. Because it includes haptic feedback, as you move your finger over the edge, it "clicks." But I'd much prefer see the screen's size increased by using the room the new touch bezel takes up. I hope Samsung has that reserved for the Galaxy Watch 6.

Instead of the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 CPU, the Galaxy Watch 5 employs the same one as the watches from last year. However, as Scott Stein of CNET noted in his review of the Galaxy Watch 4 from the previous year, performance was never really a problem. The Watch 5 series responds promptly and opens apps without delay.
