About Marayana

Marayana is an attempt to reclaim our stolen images and to restore the reflections of our features. It is a triumph for the value of beauty that has been inhabited by ugliness. Beauty as a possible act within the geographies of journalism where "buzz" and "click" have become its creed, and where "scandal" and "breaking news" have become its language. It is an attempt to champion the meaning of journalism, believing in professionalism and adhering to its rituals, without yielding to the logic of ugliness that makes triviality a value, that turns intrusion into people's individual freedoms into an event, and justifies "celebrity" culture seeking more audience and "customers" as a new law, destroying all the meanings of beauty and freedom that journalism was created to defend and that it was founded upon. Marayana is a new experience, aiming to break with existing behaviors and mentalities that have turned journalism into a commodity subject to the logic of the market and the laws of supply and demand, using all means leading to profit. Marayana does not just want to break with such behaviors and mentalities; it wants to prove that belonging to the profession of journalism is still possible, as is hope. News, before being sacred, is originally about meaning. News cannot live by killing its meaning. News is not synonymous with invading people’s privacy and private lives. It is not synonymous with judging individual actions that concern only the person performing them. It is not synonymous with exposing individuals' daily lives, beliefs, practices, and personal inclinations that do not affect others or impose an idea on them. Simply put, news is what concerns everyone’s present and affects their future. It tracks ugliness to make possible beauty that triumphs for the individual and offers the community all possible opportunities for coexistence. At Marayana, we will see ugliness as an opportunity to create beauty, see religion as an opportunity for freedom, see politics as an opportunity to reclaim the foundational meaning, to reclaim the meaning of the struggle for an idea, for a cause. We will see society as a possible space to embrace our differences and disagreements, as an opportunity for a tomorrow we dream of being possible and capable of creating a phrase of pure freedom without conditional tools or exception words. We will see culture as a common foundation that establishes our human richness. For this, Marayana will be professional, but not neutral. It will be professional by championing the meaning of news, the identity of journalism and its DNA, the duty of informing, and enabling the reader's right to information that respects their intelligence and possesses its legitimacy and reason for existence by being news or an event of public concern, and the commonality that defines an individual’s place within a public space, whose geography is rights and whose boundaries are freedom. And Marayana will not be neutral. The journalism embraced by Marayana is not cold sentences nor merchandise seeking customers. It is not professional laziness resorting to the falsehood of meeting the public’s desires.
