Born into slavery, she only enjoyed innocent childhood for a short time. In between she had 2 children with a kind man whom she met. She lived seven years in self-imposed exile, hiding in a coffin-like "garret" attached to her grandmother's porch.
This memoir is a rare firsthand account of a courageous woman's determination and endurance, her search for her own self-identity, self-preservation and her struggle for freedom, free from the bondage of slavery, for herself and her two children.
