Twella addresses the core issue of misinformation, which is a significant problem in the United States and throughout the world. It is often challenging to access trustworthy and useful information that helps us better understand issues and events in our lives and what to do about them.
There are two reasons that explain how and why the problem persists:
1. What is inside us!
We are all vulnerable to psychological tendencies. We tend to search for, select, view, and share information that confirms our beliefs. Or we gravitate towards information that triggers an emotional response or satisfies an emotional need we have. We also tend to be fiercely loyal to those in our in-group or tribe, placing trust in them even when clear evidence indicates this is misguided.
2. What is out there!
Large social media companies control much of the information and media that we view and share. While these companies have opened up access and made it possible to create and distribute information in unprecedented ways, these platforms are not designed to stop the spread of misinformation.
