Audioguide Alte Nationalgalerie Berlin, permanent and special exhibition
The Alte Nationalgalerie is the original home of the Nationalgalerie (National Gallery), whose collections today are divided between the Neue Nationalgalerie (New National Gallery), the Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart (Hamburger Bahnhof - National Gallery of Contemporary Art), the Friedrichswerdersche Kirche (Friedrichswerder Church), Museum Berggruen (Museum Berggruen) and the Sammlung Scharf-Gerstenberg (Scharf-Gerstenberg Collection).
The collection of the Alte Nationalgalerie is one of the most extensive period collections of art from between the French Revolution and World War I; between Neoclassicism and Secession. The collection is further enhanced by the unique harmony between the collection and the architectural style of the building in which it is housed.
Today, the Alte Nationalgalerie owns approximately 1800 paintings and 1500 sculptures. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the Alte Nationalgalerie will be showing a special exhibition on the 2nd exhibition floor from 23 June to 22 October 2023: "Secessions. Klimt, Stuck, Liebermann".
For the first time an exhibition at the Alte Nationalgalerie is dedicated to a comparison of the three turn-of-the-century art metropolises: Munich, Vienna, and Berlin. As modernism dawned, the artistic avant-gardes pushed for freedom in both the institutions of art and the subject matter it expresses. Many artists of the new art currents of Symbolism, Art Nouveau, and Impressionism were first presented in the highly regarded Secession exhibitions. This exhibition comprises more than 200 paintings, sculptures, and graphic works by 80 artists. Through a collaboration with the Wien Museum, it features not only many artists who can be discovered for the first time, but also foregrounds the œuvre of Gustav Klimt with numerous examples of his work. This is the first time such a comprehensive presentation of Klimt’s work has been shown in Berlin.
