Elvy Sukaesih is a legendary Indonesian dangdut singer and is nicknamed the "Queen of Dangdut". He was born to a couple from Sumedang, West Java. His singing talent was inherited from his father (his family usually calls him Abah). His father was a musician who usually performed at weddings around West Java. His career began to take off in the early 1970s when he became Rhoma Irama's accompanying singer in the Soneta Melayu Orchestra (OM), although previously he had been popular on various stages. After separating from Soneta (in 1975), he pursued a solo career and continues to exist in dangdut music until now.

Dangdut is a genre of traditional Indonesian popular musical art which specifically has Hindustani (Indian), Malay and Arabic elements. Dangdut is characterized by the beat of the tabla (an Indian percussion musical instrument) and drums. Dangdut is also heavily influenced by classical Indian music and Bollywood songs.
