About Buddhist Meditation for Universal Compassion

Mettā, from the Pali language, means lovingkindness, good will, amity, and benevolence. It is Love in a non-romantic sense. Metta bhavana, or the cultivation of lovingkindness, is a popular and effective form of Buddhist meditation practice. Successful metta meditation is not only a mental practice, but is also felt within one's heart and inner being. Metta is the quality of mind and heart in which we extend well-wishes and compassion to all sentient beings, including ourselves. History of Metta
Metta meditation in Buddhism originally comes from the Karaniya Metta Sutta, a discourse believed to be the Buddha’s own words regarding this practice. According to Buddhist tradition, the Buddha sent a group of monks into a forest to practice the dharma and meditate for a few months. When the monks arrived, they found that the forest was haunted by all kinds of ghosts and tree spirits. The monks ran back to the Buddha and told him of the experience. In response, the Buddha offered his monks the practice of metta, encouraging them to extend lovingkindess to these “evil” spirits.

When the monks returned to the forest, they sat in metta meditation. They found that the spirits stopped haunting them, and actually came to protect the monks. This story is a beautiful example of how we can bring metta to difficult beings and situations that cause fear and enmity to arise, in order to change our relationships to them from within.

In the 5th century CE in Sri Lanka, Buddhagosa wrote the Visuddhimagga, widely considered to be the most important Buddhist text in Theravada Buddhism outside of the original Pali Canon itself. The Visuddhimagga gave us many important teachings and practices. One of these is the way in which metta is often practiced today. Metta meditation is regarded as an especially powerful method on the path to enlightenment and sublime, transcendental states of consciousness, and is believed to be the key meditation practiced by Maitreya, the future Buddha-to-Come.
